How to Assign Dimensions & Use the Analysis View in D365 Business Central

Understanding how to effectively assign dimensions and utilize the Analysis View in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is crucial for optimizing financial reporting and decision-making. Whether you're a financial analyst, accountant, or business manager, these skills will empower you to harness the full potential of Dynamics 365 Business Central for better financial management and analysis.


How to Assign Dimensions in Business Central


In order to assign a dimension, you first need to set up a dimension code and dimension values. You can set up as many dimension values as you require. Assign your preset dimension to a purchase invoice by clicking on Purchasing and selecting Purchase Invoice from the menu.

Select the correct Purchase Invoice Number from the list to open the purchase invoice card.

Make sure that the Vendor Invoice Number is correct. If there is no vendor invoice number, you will need to add it before you can continue.

In this card, you will also need to assign the Item Number and Quantity if they are not already populated.

Once all of the necessary information is entered into the Purchase Invoice, select Line, then click on Related Information and select Dimensions from the dropdown to access line related information and dimensions.

Select the correct Dimension Code from the dropdown.

Under Dimension Value Code select the correct project value. Then, close the Dimensions window to return to the Purchase Invoice.

Double check that everything has populated correctly before posting. To post the Purchase Invoice, click Posting and select Post.

A popup will appear asking if to confirm that you want to post this invoice. Select Yes.

Once the invoice has posted, you will see another popup window asking if you would like to open the posted invoice. You can select yes to review the invoice if you choose, but for our purposes, we will select no and move on to the Analysis View.

Using the Analysis View in Business Central


Now that your purchase invoice is posted and we've assigned the dimension code, we are going to bring up the Analysis View. Click on the magnifying glass in the upper right corner in the Application Bar to open your Search Bar.

Start typing analysis into the search bar and select Analysis Views from the search results menu.

Click on the correct Dimension Project so that it is highlighted then select Analysis by Dimension from the card menu.

This will open the Analysis View card for the project. From here, you can change the Show Columns As field to Project to see your project numbers.

Next, adjust the Date Filter to the correct range.

Finally, select Show Matrix.

This will open the Matrix View card where you can see each project and the costs that have been allocated to them. If you click on the amount under the individual project numbers, in this case 101, you will see the Entries breakdown.

You can go even further by clicking on the individual entries to see the details of that specific entry.
